Jim Ferguson Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division prison. It is not Madison County Jail. A person may leave Ferguson for another TDCJ unit while remaining incarcerated. A person may also be released from confinement to parole or mandatory supervision, or leave after a flat discharge that completes the sentence.

Ferguson Scheduled Release Location

Ferguson is not listed as a routine regional release site in TDCJ release instructions. A person housed there may be moved to a regional site closer to the county of conviction, approved residence, or another planned destination. Some special-category male releases, including specified detainer or monitoring cases, are processed through Huntsville Unit. Families should rely on the current Scheduled Release Location, not a past unit assignment.

TDCJ says releases generally occur on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays, and warns that plans can change. Call the named release site before travel. Family pickup is allowed at the actual releasing facility. When bus transportation is used, statewide guidance describes a bus voucher. Ferguson Release Support and Funds

The official directory lists CHANGES/Pre-Release and Reentry Planning among Ferguson programs. Those programs make the unit locally relevant to release preparation, but enrollment never proves that a specific person has approval or a fixed exit date. Release eligibility and scheduling still depend on the sentence file and formal TDCJ process.

Statewide guidance describes civilian clothing, the remaining trust-fund balance, and release money. It states that parole or mandatory-supervision releases receive $50 at release and another $50 after reporting, while a Correctional Institutions Division flat discharge receives $100. A bus voucher may be used for bus transport. These are statewide descriptions, not a guarantee of a particular person's amount, mode, time, or release gate.

After release to supervision, prompt reporting matters because confinement has ended but the sentence has not. A release certificate and approved plan govern the transition. For a full discharge, historical TDCJ records and discharge papers provide stronger proof than an old projected date.

Ferguson Unit History and Scale

Ferguson opened in June 1962 and occupies about 4,355 acres near Midway. Its official capacity is 2,417. TDCJ describes a male population with G1 through G5, security detention, and transient classifications. These facts show why a county-name search can lead to the wrong system: a major state institution sits within the same county as a much different local jail.

A Madison County arrest handled only by the sheriff may never create a TDCJ record. Conversely, a state prisoner at Ferguson does not enter the county roster because of the unit's location. Choosing the custodian first prevents false conclusions about a release.
